THE 11TH HOUR, THE 11TH DAY, THE 11TH MONTH
As it has been for the past 95 years, so it was today.. At the traditional time of 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, people all over the world, the nation and here in Washington County, stood for a moment of silence to remember all those who served in the armed forces.
The Washington County celebration and commemoration was at the American Legion Hall at Fireman’s Park. The ceremony began at that special and traditional time, 11am..
They keynote speaker had one of the more interesting stories for this Veteran’s Day. Most Americans are U.S. citizens simply because they were born here, but not Inge Conley. Conley yearned all of her life to come to this country from her native Germany and once here, she was so intrigued and excited about our nation she joined the U.S. Army. She served for 20 years before retiring in 1995. She related her special perspective to the gathering at the American Legion Hall, today. (Monday). The retired Army Master Sergeant said Veteran’s Day is a day not only to remember veterans of past wars but those fighting today.

The ceremony included the recognition of all living veterans in Washington County, and a bell was tolled for all the veterans who have died in the past year.
Sgt. Conley had a busy day. She spoke to students at Brenham High School about the need to remember veterans and to thank them for their service.
All of the campuses of the Brenham School district observed Veteran’s Day, as they have done for decades.
