SOMERVILLE BAND DIRECTOR WINS UIL EXCELLENCE AWARD

  

The University Interscholastic League is proud to recognize 15 of the best UIL sponsors in Texas with the 2014 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award, and one of the winners is a band director from Somerville High School.

Carl Idlebird, a UIL marching and concert band Director for 34 years, has received 21 consecutive first division ratings in UIL marching band and has directed bands that have competed in five State Marching Contest.

Idlebird says that “The value of fair and well organized competition is immeasurable. I cannot think of better activities and opportunities to teach my students about cooperation, responsibility, punctuality, leadership, dependability, determination and comrade.”

The award, now in its 24th year, was designed to identify and recognize outstanding sponsors who help students to develop and refine their extracurricular talents to the highest degree within the educational system.

Each winner received $1,000 and a symbolic memento from the UIL in recognition of their achievements. The League continues to strive to strengthen and promote the role of extracurricular activities in Texas.

  1. Mr. I, as he is known in Somerville, is one of the most dedicated instructors around. He truly lives to teach. His band and his school community have the highest respect for him. He sets high standards for his students and serves as a great role model. His band successes tell the story. Congratulations!
