NEW YEAR’S TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUG ARREST

A 28-year old Somerville woman was arrested within the first hour of the New Year Wednesday after a Brenham police officer stopped her for a minor traffic violation.

Officer Kevin Mertz stopped  Markesha Rochelle Powell at 12:39am, New Year’s Day, at the intersection of Lacy Lane and Old Chappell Hill Road.

Once he made contact with the driver, he could see a partially smoked marijuana cigar.  That prompted a probable cause search that found even more marijuana and a pill of Ecstasy.

Powell was arrested for possession of controlled substances and the misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
