Brenham Heritage Museum Director Doug Price says the history of the world is more than the works of great men, it is also about the migration of people. He said Wednesday at a groundbreaking for an historic restoration of the old Brenham Bus Depot, that is why it was important to keep alive the memories of how people traveled for decades, when the bus station played the role that airports play today.

Price says the Bus Depot will be both restored as a museum and a place where people can get a meal just like the ones served at the depot when it opened in the 1940s.

Ground was broken for the new mseum of the old Brenham Bus Depot Wednesday.

The Bus Depot operated from the late 1940s to 2007. A donation from Roberta Cole Johnson allowed the Brenham Heritage Museum to acquire the depot six years ago. Price says the restoration work will take about six months.

The groundbreaking featured stories from Mayor Pro-tem Gloria Nix and Joe Al Picone about what an exciting and important place the old depot was when it first opened. Both recounted seeing soldiers leaving Brenham for the last time.
