GOVERNOR, CONGRESSMAN APPLAUDS STEPPED UP BORDER EFFORTS
Texas Gov. Rick Perry and at least one member of the state’s congressional delegation are encouraged by the federal government stepping in the border crisis that has emerged along the Texas/Mexican border.
The Obama Administration announced plans to create more detention space for families caught at the border and to speed up cases through immigration courts, hoping to stem a growing tide of immigration from Central America.
Alejandro Mayorkas, the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security said the government is ‘actively pursuing additional capacity’ to detain families, a proposition that in the past has proved complicated as well as controversial.
Gov. Rick Perry sent a letter to President Obama Friday saying ‘the safety and security of our border communities is being threatened by this flood of illegal immigration and the crisis worsens by the day.’
The governor told the President that he was encouraged by the recently announced initiatives to more aggressively repatriate illegal immigrants back to their countries or origin, and provide additional aid to those countries that prompt many of their citizens to flee to the United States.
Congressman Henry Cuellar of Laredo, who decried the lack of urgency by the Obama administration earlier this week said he too was, encouraged by the policy changes.
