BRENHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT GIVES SAFETY TIPS FOR A FUN HALLOWEEN

The Brenham Police Department is stressing safety this Halloween and gives some advice on how to keep everyone safe.

“Take a few moments to consider basic safety precautions to help your child’s Halloween night be all about fun. Choose bright costumes and have children carry flashlights or glow sticks so they are easily visible. Add reflective tape to costumes and candy bags,” said Brenham Police Chief Craig Goodman.

“Also, eliminate the unknown – plan the trick or treat route in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets. Make sure children know it’s ok to do everything they can if someone they don’t know is trying to get them to go anywhere. Teach them to say ‘NO’ in a loud voice and make sure they know phone numbers and home addresses. Give them a safe word to use in case a stranger says they are there to take the child home. And teach them to call 911 in the event of an emergency,” Goodman said.

Other tips include:

  • Make sure older children take friends and stay together in a group.
  • Never send younger children out alone – they should always be with a parent, guardian or other trusted adult.
  • Always walk with younger children to the door to receive treats.
  • Don’t let children enter a home without an adult with them.
  • Be sure children don’t approach any vehicle, occupied or not, unless an adult is with them.

“Common sense ideas, things we all know. We just wanted to reinforce them so all of our kids can have a ‘spook-tacular’ good time.  And of course, if parents are looking for a fun, safe place to trick or treat, they can always come by Max Donuts where our Citizens on Patrol members and officers will be handing out candy from 6-8 p.m.,” Goodman said
