BLINN’S LVN TRANSITION PROGRAM COMING IN MAY TO BRENHAM

Blinn College is expanding its Licensed Vocational Nursing – Transition program to the Brenham campus with a pilot program set to begin in May 2016.

The LVN-T Program accepts currently licensed vocational nurses and prepares them to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses in one year.

Students who complete the program and pass the National Council Licensure Examination are qualified for a wide array of nursing positions, including pediatric, geriatric, hospice, school and clinical nursing. New graduates can expect to earn over $52,000 per year.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 19 percent between 2012 and 2022 due to the increased emphasis on preventative care, growing rates of chronic conditions and demand for healthcare services.

Students must complete 31 hours in prerequisite courses to enroll in the LVN-T Program: Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Microbiology for Non-Science Majors, General Psychology, Lifespan Growth and Development, Composition I or II, Pharmacology, Health Assessment and Foundations for Nursing Practice. These courses must be completed with a “C” or better and can be in progress at the time of application, but must be completed prior to the Summer I semester.

Once accepted, LVN-T students begin with two specifically-designed transition courses during the Summer I session, then study nursing skills and mental health in Summer II. They then join the second-year Associate Degree Nursing students during the Fall and Spring semesters as they take advanced medical surgical courses, pediatric and maternal child courses and complete a capstone course.

Most LVN-T students continue to work as LVNs, but cut back their weekly hours to focus on their studies.

Prior to gaining admission, all students must attend an information session hosted at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Clinical Building I (8441 State Highway 47). To register for one of the sessions, held the first week of each month, visit: www.blinn.edu/twe/adn/lvn_info_session.php.

Blinn’s Division of Health Sciences offers associate degree nursing, dental hygiene, emergency medical services, physical therapist assistant, radiologic technology, fire science, veterinary technology and vocational nursing programs designed to train students for high-demand professions.

  1. Is there a time limit for the prerequisite courses? I’ve had them all but it’s been some time since taking them.
