Ho hum….same old last names pretty much every single year, is the gene pool that small when it comes to selecting Maifest Royalty? It is no wander this old Brenham tradition is failing to capture the interest of most of the town, it is very exclusive instead of inclusive.
I disagree as far as exclusive instead of inclusive. Now royalty I can see your point, but that is determined I think more who want to pay for the costumes and throwing the event. That said, I know of several people who have been able to participate in this event in other areas if they were asked in all ages, and I think that if there were others who really wanted to be royalty and knew how to keep costs down they’d be in the running.
And we’ve had first timers as well in royalty – such as Dallas Gonzales a couple of years ago.
But in all honesty though – If I had the money for the costumes the royalty wears, I’d instead turn down the offer and instead go on a trip to Disney World or another location (even in state).
But I say that because it’s their money they can use it however they choose.
I agree. Exclusive not inclusive. It’s that way with everything in Brenham. It’s gotten a little better over the years, but the old money still rules. After 27 years and raising 4 kids there, still considered as outsiders. That’s why we moved just recently.
