JUNETEENTH CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE
The Juneteenth Association of Washington County continue with the Juneteenth celebrations today (Saturday).
Juneteenth commemorates the anniversary of the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston on June 19th in 1865. The soldiers carried with them then news that the Civil war was over and that slavery had been abolished through President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect January 1st, 1863.
Juneteenth Association of Washington County President, Pamela Jenkins says that there was a good crowd at last night’s concert.
This morning (Saturday), the Juneteenth celebrations continue with a downtown parade at 10:30am. KWHI will be broadcasting the parade live.
Jenkins went on to say that there will be more activities this afternoon.
Activities will be available at Fireman’s Park from noon to 4:00pm this afternoon.
