BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING ON TAX RATE TODAY

The Brenham City Council will hold a public hearing today (Thursday) over the proposed tax rate.

City staff members have proposed that the council adopt a tax rate of 50.7 cents per hundred dollar valuation. It’s a 3.4 cents increase over the current tax rate for the City of Brenham.

The change means that individuals and businesses who own property within the city limits will see a 7.64 percent increase in paid taxes. Brenham City Manager, Terry Roberts, says the increase is needed to fund the addition of three paid firefighters to the Fire Department.

The tax rate increase is expected to generate and additional $277,230 to fund the $60.4 million budget for the city of Brenham. Next year’s budget is actually $2.3 million less than the current year’s budget.

The City Council could approve the $60.4 million budget following the hearing.

The Council will meet today at 1 p.m. at the Brenham City Hall on West Vulcan Street.
