CONFIDENTIAL RECORDS SOUGHT IN BRENHAM POLICE DISMISSAL

One month after a Brenham Police Officer was fired from his job, the City of Brenham has yet to release confidential records that would reveal more information about his termination.

In August, Richard Bobbitt was let go from the Brenham Police Department after an internal investigation found he used excessive force during an arrest in July.

The former Corporal was involved in a pursuit of a stolen vehicle on July 14 when a female suspect left Brenham driving toward Houston. She was pursued by Corporal Bobbitt and other law enforcement officers, with multiple agencies involved in the pursuit. The suspect’s vehicle was stopped near the Harris/Waller County line when her tires were deflated by a spike strip deployed on US 290.  Bobbitt removed the female suspect from the vehicle once it had stopped. The investigation showed that Corporal Bobbitt unnecessarily struck the suspect multiple times in her face and head after she was removed from the vehicle.

After the investigation, KBTX of Bryan/College Station made an open records request  for documents including dashboard camera video(s), employment records and any previous complaints that may have been filed against Bobbitt.

While KBTX blieves the release of these documents would allow for more transparency, Assistant City Attorney, Cary Bovey, has asked the Texas Attorney General to clarify what should and should not be released.
