ELGIN BOY DIES AFTER WEST NILE DIAGNOSIS

  

The Department of State Health Services is investigating whether or not a 13-year-old Elgin boy has died from West Nile Virus.

Cody Hopkins passed away on Sunday after doctors told his family that the boy tested positive for West Nile Virus. Hopkins was admitted to Dell Children’s Hospital in the beginning of October after feeling ill. His condition quickly became worse, as he lost motor function and speech ability. The Department of State Health Services is currently awaiting their investigation results.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 1-percent of people who are infected with the virus will develop a serious neurologic illness. About 10 percent of people who develop neurologic infection due to West Nile will die.
