A Houston woman is in custody after a homeowner in Brenham allegedly caught her breaking into a home.

According to Sheriff Otto Hanak, Monday around noon, Washington County Deputies responded to a residence located on Tommelson Creek Road in reference to a 911 call of a residential burglary in progress.

As reported, the homeowner, who was inside the residence, was startled by loud noises coming from her garage and in addition, reported that someone was attempting to gain entry into her residence from the garage entry door by striking the door handle with a heavy object.  The homeowner then defended herself and her property by retrieving a firearm and detained this person until Sheriff’s deputies arrived and made an arrest.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Houston resident Devin Denise Brooks, who had entered the residence once making entry from the garage, claimed her vehicle had run out of gasoline, yet failed to provide deputies with any reasonable excuse for her presence and purpose on Tommelson Creek Road or in Washington County.

Brooks, who has an extensive criminal history, was arrested and charged with a 2nd Degree Felony, Burglary of Habitation and is currently being held in the Washington County jail on $100,000.00  bond.
