According to the Burleson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and the Caldwell Fire Department were dispatched to Private Road 2033 off of County Road 333 north of Caldwell in response to a grass fire just after 2 p.m.

When they arrived, the deputies observed that the fire was approximately a half-acre in size. The area was surrounded by tall grass and very thick smoke. The owner of the land, identified as Ms. Doolittle, said her husband was fighting the grass fire when she lost sight of him in the flames and smoke.

According to the Sheriff’s office, Deputy Canterberry and Sgt. Edwards began searching the area for Mr. Doolittle when they located him attempting to crawl away from the fire. Mr. Doolittle was unable to walk on his own. Deputy Canterberry and Caldwell Firefighter Brandon Qualls carried the man to safety away from the smoke and flames.

EMS arrived and Mr. Doolittle was transported to St. Joseph in Bryan for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor burns.
