WALLER CO. AUDIT RELEASED 16 MONTHS AFTER GUNS STOLEN
Waller County commissioners formally recorded the results of an audit of weapons owned by the sheriff’s office on Wednesday.
The audit was released 16 months after thieves stole a number of firearms from Sheriff Glen Smith’s car.
The audit stated the total number of guns in the office’s possession and made suggestions of how to track them better.
The theft that spurred the audit happened in December 2015 when Sheriff Smith and Waller County Precinct 4 Commissioner Justin Beckendorff where having lunch at Salt Grass Steakhouse along the Katy Freeway. Thieves broke in to their trucks and stole a total of 10 guns.
One of the guns stolen from Sheriff Smith was a German sub-machine gun that is banned in several states, except for use by law enforcement.
Then last November, sheriff's office authorities informed county officials that two more firearms could not be accounted for in storage.
District Attorney Elton Mathis previously said he would wait to consider taking action until the internal audit was complete.
The audit report states the office, as of December 16th, had 223 weapons. Of those, 187 were assigned to staff and 36 were in inventory.
Sheriff Smith said a new software system, which was donated to the office, will help them better track the guns.
