OLDEST HOUSE IN WASHINGTON COUNTY IN NEED OF REPAIRS
The oldest home in Washington County is in need of repairs.
The John P. Coles House in Independence is over 190 years old and in need of a roof work and repairs to its porch and siding.
The house was one of Texas’ earliest homes, believed to have been built about 1827. It is a good example of how a wealthy family lived on the early Texas frontier.
Historical preservation experts recommend any work done to the house be authentic to the period. According to the Brenham Banner Press, the right kind of roof will cost between $15,000 and $20,000.
Donations can be sent to the Independence Historical Society- 10270 T.S. Saul Road, Brenham, Texas 77833.
The Independence Historical Society is a non-profit membership organization founded in 1966 to encourage the preservation of records, artifacts, buildings, sites, and structures of historic interest.
The Society, now numbering 225 members, educates the public about the significance and value of the Independence comunity through its monthly meetings, special events, marker program, and stewardship of three historic buildings adjacent to Old Baylor Park.
