5TH ANNUAL LOCAL HISTORY DAY HAPPENING NEXT WEEK

  

Hundreds of students will get a peak into the past with the 5th Annual Local History Day next week.

"Local History Day virtually places students back in time,” said Jennifer Eckermann, manager of Main Street Brenham for the City and co-leader of the project.

Students get to experience history by meeting costumed forefathers at historic venues, hearing their stories and music, seeing their lifestyles, learning their customs, and playing their games.

"More importantly, students who learn our local history are the ones most likely to develop pride in the community" said Eckermann.  "And that community pride can put a student on the path to leadership.”

Another primary goal is to reach parents with ideas for family outings to enjoy the rich heritage of Brenham. "About 750 students and teachers will attend Local History Day this year, and we hope some will take their friends and families to see these historical places" continued Eckermann.

“Students learn more, and participate more, if they enjoy themselves. This event shows them that history can be fun,” said Bonnie Brinkmeyer, Director of Instructional Services and Accountability for BISD.

Brenham ISD 4th graders will participate in Local History Day on Tuesday and 7th graders will enjoy the event on Thursday.
