BURTON SCHOOL BOARD DISCUSES CAMPUS SECURITY

With the recent school shooting in Florida, campus security was on the minds of the Burton School Board during their meeting Monday.  The trustees heard a short report from Antonio Naylor of Reliance Architecture on ways the security on the campus could be increased.  He explained that while the current locked entry and call box was good, a better solution would be an entry into a closed office, were a person would have to be buzzed into the rest of the school after they were checked in.  He also pointed out that more video cameras were needed to cover all of the campus and that the parking areas were uncontrolled.  Board members discussed ways to get law enforcement officers to spend more time on campus, and suggested that the Sheriff’s Deputies park and come inside and walk the hallways.

In other action, the board approved the calendar for the next school year.  The first day of school for students is August 21st and their last day is May 23rd.  They will have the entire week of Thanksgiving off and 2 weeks off for Christmas.  Superintendent Edna Kennedy said that a few more minutes of school time have been added to allow for any missed bad weather days.

During the consent agenda, board member Linda Hasten said that they need to spend more time looking at the district spending and how it compares to the budget each month.  The other board members were in agreement so a workshop session has been set up for Monday, March 5th for the board to look at the spending line by line.

The board appointed Dana Balcerek to replace Sheila Ripple as the Deputy Early Voting Clerk for the School Board Election on May 5th.  Trustees also pass a resolution declaring March 6th as Education Day and encouraged everyone to learn about the issues and candidates and vote their choice on that day.

Board member Brian Jaeger finished up the open meeting with a power point on School Board Member Ethics.

The Burton School Board went into Executive Session to discuss the contracts of the Athletic Director, the Elementary and High School Principals, the Special Services Cooperative Director, and the School Counselor, but no action was taken on the contracts after the session.

  1. Burton ISD needs to get serious about Active Shooter threats and look at what Fayetteville ISD implemented this week with their Guardian Plan……Any Sheepdogs there????

  2. Encourage all of you to get out and exercise your right to vote.
We are needing school board members that truly have the interest in our schools, students and teachers. Find the person who is dedicated to childrens’ learning, committed to spend the time on the board and respects others views.

Teachers need a pay raise. Give them a much needed raise instead of the supertindent.

Hope the AD and his coaching staff were present to view and hear the slide show on ethics. Some of their poor actions and decisions have harmed the athletes. Maybe they need some training. They shouldn’t be able to “control” their agenda.
Maybe time to get some new blood.

    1. Yes, please get out and vote. Teachers and all staff would be well-served with at least a 3% raise. Most of that will be used to pay for increased costs of healthcare. There is never enough for more disposable income.

The superintendent doubled her own raise last year. That should disqualify her from a raise this year.

As for th AD and staff, they have done a great job across the Board. The kids are coming out in droves to compete. The coaches are respected by the kids. If there has been “harm” done where is any proof?

  3. It’s about time someone brought up ethics! He brought up a problem that’s gone on way too long around here. I hope he addressed issues from the board down to the cleaning staff! I just hope it’s not just words and something will change. Certain people get special treatment and things get swept under the rug all too often! Good to see something at least got addressed.
