TEXAS RANGER DAY SATURDAY IN BURTON
The 8th Annual Texas Ranger Day takes place in Burton Saturday from noon to 5:00 PM. The event celebrates the history of the Texas Ranger and takes place in downtown Burton. Susan Kiel, President of the Burton Heritage Society explains some of the activities at the event:
There will also be a little Mr. and Miss. contest. Admission to the event is free, and if you would like to sample the cookoff, tickets are $10 for all the fajitas and beans you can eat.
Ranger day started out as a recognition of the life of Texas Ranger Leander McNelly, who is buried at Mt. Zion cemetery in Burton. Keil and Heritage Society Secretary Stephanie Jarvis explain some of his signifigance:
Proceeds from Ranger Day go towards the restoration the historical Mt. Zion Chapel located at the cemetery. The Heritage Society has used funds raised at previous Ranger Days to replace the roof and steeple on the chapel.
