WALLER COMES BACK TO BEAT THE CUBS, 28-21

WALLER -- The Waller Bulldogs scored two fourth quarter touchdowns for a come-from-behind 28-21 win over the Brenham Cubs, Friday night in Waller.

Brenham (0-2) entered the final stanza with a 21-14 lead.  However, the Bulldogs (1-1) put together 75 and 71 yards to pull out the win.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Cubs took a 7-0 lead when Daylonn McCowan sprinted 68 yards for the touchdown.

Six minutes later, Jamari Thompson pulled Waller even, with a three-yard scoring run.

Daylonn McCowan rushed for 108 yards and had 2 TDs for the night.

The Cubs looked poised to reclaim the lead before halftime, but a 68-yard run by quarterback Garrison Weiss was called back on a holding call.

Midway through the third quarter Brenham reclaimed the lead when backup quarterback Aldyn Schroeder hit Jackson Mueller with a 16-yard touchdown strike.  Schroeder would finish the night 6-for-7 for 46 yards.

Waller came right back on the ensuing possession, capped by a one-yard run by quarterback Cade Bartlett.

Cub's special teams member Trey Lawhun makes a nice runback of a Waller kickoff in the first half.

The Cubs responded with a 51-yard drive, capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by McCowan, who would finish the night with 108 yards on 15 carries.

Brenham led 21-14 going into the final quarter, but the Bulldogs put together long, time-consuming drives that culminated with touchdowns: a 2-yard run by Jared Dicus and a 2-yard run by Bartlett.

Waller’s defense then backed the Cubs up as their final drive to attempt to tie the game ended with back-to-back sacks.

Cubs head coach Eliot Allen says there were a number of factors that led to the Bulldogs scoring on their last three drives, “We were a little gassed, we had a few people dinged up, we had some plays we blew the assignment on, it was just a combination of things.”

“I’m proud of our kids,” said Allen.  “We made improvement over last week…but it stinks to lose.”

Cub quarterback Garrison Weiss slips away from a Waller defender in the first half.

“We made a lot of mistakes in the first half—the offensive line didn’t play particularly well, but we made some adjustments to pick their pressures and move the ball a little bit.”

The Cubs will host Houston Heights next Friday night at 7:30.  The game can be heard on AM-1280 KWHI, FM-101.7 and www.kwhi.com with the Sports Doc and Tommy Lange.
