CUBS PULL OUT DRAMATIC WIN, 35-34

A six-yard touchdown pass from Garrison Weiss to Zyron Smith with just 12 seconds to go, capped a furious comeback, giving the Brenham Cubs a 35-34 win over Eastview, Friday night at Cubs Stadium.

The Cubs (2-3/1-1), who trailed 31-7 at halftime, rallied for two touchdowns over the game’s final five minutes to pull out the dramatic win.

Brenham got the scoring started, when Daylonn McCowan capped a 77-yard drive with a 4-yard run.

The Patriots (2-3/1-1) would then go on a 31-point run as they scored on their next five possessions to take a commanding 24-point lead into halftime.

The Cubs then came out in the second half and marched the ball downfield on their first two drives of the half, led by backup quarterback Alldyn Schroeder.

Schroeder would throw touchdown passes to Yann Toussom (23-yards) and Tyree Jackson (37-yards) to get Cubs within 10 points at 31-21.

Schroeder would then leave the game on the next series after suffering a leg injury.

Weiss returned to the post and led the Cubs on their two scoring drives in the fourth quarter, including a 12-yard touchdown run that closed the score to 34-28.

The Cubs’ defense then shut down the Patriots, forcing a punt with just over 2:00 left in the game.

Brenham then marched 61 yards on nine plays, combining the run with the pass and effective clock management, culminating in Smith’s dive in the corner of the end zone, just inside the pylon with the game winner.

Cubs Head Coach Eliot Allen was ecstatic with the win, “it was a great win for us.  We never gave up.”  But he was also cautious, “we just can’t keep having to come back like this.  We’ve got to play better early on.”

The Cubs will now head to Marble Falls for next Friday night’s game.  Kickoff is set for 7:30, with the Pregame Show at 7:00 on AM-1280 KWHI, FM-101.7 and kwhi.com.
