Blinn Trustee Board Vice Chair Richard Powell has died.

Powell passed away Saturday morning, at the age of 71.  He was appointed to the Blinn board in 2014, to represent Precinct 1.

During his time at Blinn, Powell oversaw the building of several new facilities, such as Mill Creek Hall and the Kruse Center.

He was also a part of Blinn’s new involvement with the RELLIS Academic Alliance at the RELLIS Campus.  In addition, he supported students with the creation of the Barbara and Richard Powell Endowed Scholarship.

Powell earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from Baylor University and his Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law.  After earning his license, he went to work at Briscoe and Shaffer in Houston, where he became a partner and the firm was renamed Briscoe, Shaffer and Powell. Powell practiced law until 1990, when he moved to Brenham.

Blinn Board Chair Charles Moser says Powell was “a caring mentor, an advocate for students, and a dear friend.”  Blinn Chancellor Dr. Mary Hensley called Powell a “dedicated supporter of Blinn College”, saying the school appreciates the impact he made on the college and community.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Brenham.
