PUBLIC TOWN HALL ON BLUEBONNET HAVEN FACILITY SET FOR TUESDAY NIGHT
The public is invited to provide feedback concerning the controversial Bluebonnet Haven Youth Treatment Facility tonight (Tuesday).
Washington County Judge John Brieden has worked to set up a town hall meeting at the Washington County Fairgrounds Event Center, set for 6 p.m.
Brieden said he has invited numerous city and state officials to attend the meeting, along with representatives from the Brenham school district, Washington County Chamber, Economic Development Foundation, and the Brenham State School.
However, according to Brieden, Bluebonnet Haven owner Randall Bryant has opted not to attend. Bryant has not responded to KWHI’s requests for comment.
Bluebonnet Haven, located on Highway 36 South near the Brenham State Supported Living Center, has been a heated topic of debate amongst the community.
Several local and county officials, from Brenham City Council, Washington County Commissioners, and the Brenham school board, have made no secret of their opposition to the licensing of the facility, saying it would harm the community. State Senator Lois Kolkhorst has also raised concerns.
If licensed, Bluebonnet Haven would act as a residential treatment center for troubled youths. The Texas Education Agency previously approved an application for Trinity Charter School to operate at Bluebonnet Haven in April.
Despite this, Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson has recently said he believes Brenham schools will be responsible for educating the residents of the facility. He said he has heard that Trinity Charter School no longer has a recognized school district at Bluebonnet Haven, since it did not have any students when the TEA determines funding for the next year by checking enrollment.
