A Brenham High School teacher has been recognized as the VFW Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year.

Madison Ruiz received the award Wednesday, for District 17.  Ruiz has been a teacher at Brenham High School since 2015, teaching AP human geography and AVID2.

Ruiz, born and raised in Brenham, graduated from Brenham High School in 2012.  She earned an associate’s degree from Blinn College in 2013, and a bachelor’s in history in 2015 from the University of Texas at Tyler.

Ruiz says her passion for history and social studies fuels her overall goal for all of her students to become successful citizens worldwide.
