LIFETIME LEARNING HOLDING PRESENTATION ON CIVIL WAR NEXT WEEK

Dr. Dwight Pitcaithley

An upcoming Lifetime Learning luncheon will feature a Civil War presentation.

Dr. Dwight Pitcaithley, a history professor at New Mexico State University, will speak March 8th on “Texas, Slavery and the Confederate Cause”.  His presentation will focus on the secession of the southern states between the election of President Lincoln and the firing on Fort Sumter.

Dr. Pitcaithley will explore secession from the perspective of the South’s elected officials, drawing from his research on Congress proceedings, the eleven secession conventions, Tennessee and Kentucky legislatures, and the Washington Peace Convention.

In addition to being a professor, Dr. Pitcaithley also served as the Chief Historian of the National Park Service from 1995 to 2005.  He authored The U.S. Constitution and Secession: A Documentary Anthology of Slavery and White Supremacy (2018), and has contributed to several other historical texts, including Slavery and Public History: The Tough Stuff of American Memory (2006) and Becoming Historians (2009).

The event will be held March 8th from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Blinn College Student Center.  Cost for the event, which includes a buffet lunch, is $25.  The registration deadline is Friday.

To register for the luncheon, go online to www.lifetimelearningbrenham.org.
