Seventh grader Sofia Martinez will be able to take part in the forum at Rice University in June. She was nominated for the program by Brenham Middle School teacher Angela Powell, and selected based on her academic potential and interest in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The National Youth Leadership Forum: Explore STEM program helps students develop critical thinking skills through hands-on experiences using new technology.
The program provides students a head start on planning for the future, while giving them an opportunity to collaborate with students from across the nation.
Martinez is currently enrolled in the AVID program at Brenham Junior High School. AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, looks to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other opportunities.
Martinez said she’s excited and nervous about the chance to attend the forum, but she’s very interested in exploring the different career paths that are available.
