Six Washington County 4-Hers spent part of their spring break in Austin, visiting the state capitol.
Hundreds of 4-Hers from across the state met last Thursday at the capitol for a full day of activities. The Texas 4-H Foundation sponsored this event to allow youth of all ages to get a citizenship experience, and to learn about the legislative process while Congress is in session.
4-Hers had the chance to hear from Representatives Ernest Bailes and Trent Ashby, who spoke about their upbringing in 4-H and how the program helped them personally and professionally.
Members also met with State Representative Ben Leman and Senator Lois Kolkhorst, who discussed their jobs in Congress and in committees, how a bill becomes law, and how the work 4-Hers do as young people shapes them into future leaders.
In addition to speeches and meetings with officials, 4-Hers visited the House and Senate chambers with VIP access on the floor, witnessed a committee meeting hearing from the House gallery, toured the capitol building, and had lunch with other 4-Hers and Texas 4-H Council members.
Those in attendance from Washington County included Madison Moran, Dawson Moran, Mallory Winkelmann, Dalton Winkelmann, William Schomburg, Marshall Wagner, County Extension Agent Kara Matheney, and parents Christy Moran, Stephanie Winkelmann, Debra Wagner and Greg and Karen Schomburg.
