Shannon Denise Smith pleaded guilty to the theft Monday in district court, according to a release from the Waller County District Attorney’s Office. Smith was indicted in July of 2017 on a charge of Theft by a Public Servant in the amount of $40,530.
A joint investigation between Prairie View police and the Texas Rangers led to the indictment, which alleged that Smith stole the money between October of 2010 and January of 2017 in her capacity as the city treasurer.
Smith faces a sentencing in May, where she could face as much as three years in state prison and ordered to make restitution.
The Honorable Albert M. McCaig presided over Monday’s proceedings, and will conduct the sentencing in May. The State of Texas was represented by District Attorney Elton R. Mathis and Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Dorsey.
