A longtime officer of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office is wrapping up 28 years of service this weekend.

Sergeant Investigator Damon Wegner is officially retiring on Saturday. Although he will no longer hold a full-time position, he will remain a part-time deputy as he trains his replacement and fills in where needed.

Before beginning his career in law enforcement, Sgt. Wegner attended both Brenham and Bellville schools. After graduating, he worked for Blue Bell Creameries, Raymond Wegner Construction Company, Woodson Lumber Company, and was a self-employed contractor.

He was recruited to work at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office by former Sheriff J.W. Jankowski.

On New Year’s Day of 1991, Sgt. Wegner began working as a Jailor at the Sheriff’s Office. He achieved the rank of Sergeant while working full-time as a Jailor, and put himself through the Police Officers Night Academy at the Precinct Seven Constables Office in Bryan.

In 1995, Sgt. Wegner was promoted to the Washington County Patrol Division and later became a Field Training Officer. He was promoted in 1998 to the Civil Process, Warrant, and Estray Division, and in 2004 to the Criminal Investigation Division.

Sgt. Wegner has achieved a Master Peace Officer Certification, carried a full criminal investigation case load, and completed over 3,500 hours of continuing law enforcement and corrections education.  He is also a full access TLETS Operator, Certified Instructor, Animal Complaint Investigator, Crime Stoppers Coordinator, Certified Home/Business Inspector, and Sex Offender Registration and Compliance Deputy.

He says he’s thankful for having been able to serve Washington County.

Sheriff Otto Hanak says Sgt. Wegner has been “a true asset to not only the Sheriff’s office, but to the citizens of Washington County”. Sheriff Hanak, along with the entire staff at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, wishes him good health and happiness as he starts a new chapter in life.

Sgt. Wegner, along with his wife of 36 years, Frances, have three daughters and two grandchildren.
