BILL TRANSFERRING BURLESON CO. JURISDICTION FROM RENKEN PASSES

Washington Co. District Attorney speaks to commissioners at their meeting February 5, 2019, as they consider a resolution granting their support of a bill giving the Burleson County Attorney felony jurisdiction.

Lawmakers have passed legislation granting the Burleson County Attorney felony jurisdiction.

Senate Bill 891, consisting of several local bills that fit into one measure affecting court systems across Texas, officially passed Monday after going through conference committee.

Washington County District Attorney Julie Renken, who has also served as Burleson County’s District Attorney since 2013, said the bill transfers Burleson County jurisdiction from her to Burleson County Attorney Susan Deski.

Renken noted that Deski would not become a district attorney with this change, she would just be given felony jurisdiction in addition to her current responsibilities as county attorney.

Renken said the bill passing will allow her and her team to spend more time with the cases in the fast-growing Washington County.

The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature.  Pending approval, it will become effective September 1st.
