AUSTIN CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE CAUTIONING AGAINST PHONE SCAMS

The Austin County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public after receiving reports of phone scams.

The Sheriff’s Office says to be aware of phone calls requesting money, and to be cautious of people asking for money to be sent via pre-paid cards.  It reminds the public that government and law agencies will not call and ask for money.

Citizens are encouraged to protect their personal information, especially while online, as scammers can obtain that information from the internet and attempt to contact them by phone.

The Sheriff’s Office recommends hanging up on suspicious phone calls and registering with the National Do Not Call Registry, by calling 1-888-382-1222.  If calls continue to come in even after registering, there is a good chance those calls are scams.
