The event on July 29th featured the 2019 Washington County READ selection, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer.

Eight teens and two adults were treated to a review of the book by Assistant Librarian Tammy Murphy, photos of Kamkwamba’s wind turbine, and a preview of the film on Netflix.

However, Andria Heiges, City Librarian and Honorary Chair for this year’s READ, said the highlight of the event was the chance for each teen to build a wind turbine.  Brenham’s science-loving teens worked in groups to build a turbine from a kit with instructions, and a bit of experimentation.

The book is a true story about Kamkwamba, a teenager from Malawi who built a wind turbine from discarded materials.

This year’s READ is the 11th year for the event, and will be held Friday, October 25th at 5 p.m. at Unity Theatre in Brenham.  Co-author Bryan Mealer will be at the theatre that evening.  A reception will be held in the lobby, followed by a dramatic reading of the book.
