The Rocky Creek Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched around 2:15 p.m. to a grass fire on Rehburg Road, near FM 1948.  The fire started near the Hopewell Church and cemetery, as well as a two-story home and three large metal outbuildings.

The fire spread into the adjacent brush, which made it difficult for firefighters to access due to the rolling, rocky terrain.  Erratic and dry thunderstorm winds also created control issues.

Mutual aid was provided by the Prairie Hill, Gay Hill, Burton, Salem, and Somerville Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as CERT and EMS.  Units cleared the scene at 7:30 p.m.

According to Rocky Creek Fire Chief Tim Mantey, due to the quick responses of all agencies involved, approximately $2.5 million of assets and improvements were saved.  The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

  1. Washington county has a history of enacting the burn ban when we finally get rain. We should have had a ban like surrounding counties last month.
