BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL PASSES TOURISM STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN

Brenham city officials have established a plan for tourism in the city and Washington County moving forward.

Vicky Soderberg of Cygnet Strategies explains tourism study data to the Brenham City Council at its meeting Thursday.

The Brenham City Council at its meeting Thursday moved to adopt the Visit Brenham/Washington County tourism strategic action plan. The city began the project almost a year ago, when tourism responsibilities moved to the city.

Through the plan’s development, city officials traveled to locations across the county and met with tourism partners, to discuss the current state of tourism and potentially establish a stronger visitor program.

The vote came after reports from Brenham Tourism and Marketing Director Jennifer Eckermann and Vicky Soderberg of Cygnet Strategies.

Soderberg said the project was started because there was not a full-scale plan in place. She presented an evaluation detailing several findings on what some tourists experience when they visit.

Soderberg said there are steps the city can take to help remedy these issues, like developing information kiosks in different communities. She also recommended working to improve the “heritage experience”, increasing the amount and quality of events that appeal to visitors, and establishing an identity and the pillars of what people want the city to be.

Eckermann said the full tourism strategic action plan will be posted on the city’s website, www.cityofbrenham.org.  She also said she had plans Friday to visit with county officials about the plans for each of the county’s individual communities.
