COUNCIL, CENSUS MEETINGS ON TAP FOR THURSDAY IN BRENHAM

Local officials will be busy in Brenham this (Thursday) afternoon at a pair of public meetings.

The first meeting will be with Brenham City Councilmembers at 1 p.m. at City Hall. On the agenda for councilmembers is a contract for replacement of a crossing at Burleson Road and Little Sandy Creek.  The crossing was damaged by floodwaters from May 2016 and Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

The council is considering accepting the bid of Angel Brothers Enterprises at $1.07 million. The city was able to receive funding through FEMA’s Hazardous Mitigation Grant Program, so it will only need to fund the remaining 25 percent of the project.  Once the contract is finalized, Angel Brothers will have 120 days to complete the project.

Officials will then move to the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library from 3 to 5 p.m., for the first meeting of the Complete Count Committee. The volunteer group has been established to increase awareness about the 2020 U.S. census and encourage involvement.

This afternoon’s meeting will discuss the role, duties and responsibilities of the committee. It will also cover data showing where historically in Washington County there has been low census participation.  Strategies to get complete counts in those locations will also be discussed.

The committee intends to look for representation from several area groups, such as the cities of Brenham and Burton, Chappell Hill, county government agencies, local schools and colleges, faith-based organizations, the senior center, the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, and media.
