Earlier this year, Washington County Farm Bureau hosted the Summer Ag Tour with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service for 4-H students and their parents.
For the Farm Bureau’s educational and outreach efforts, it was one of three county Farm Bureaus to be recognized by TFB during the organization’s 86th annual meeting in San Antonio, December 7-9.
Washington County Farm Bureau President Larry Winkelmann said, like many areas, Washington County faces a growing urban population, which could lead to a loss of agricultural land and “a disconnect between urban and rural residents”. He said the Farm Bureau’s mission is to “promote agriculture and its importance to our community and state”.
Through the Summer Ag Tour, students and parents were able to meet farmers, tour various farms, and learn more about production agriculture. Throughout the tour, they learned about the growth cycle of corn and cotton, technology used in agriculture, irrigation, and harvesting of crops.
Many of the students who attended the tour did not have an agricultural background, so the visits with farmers enabled them to learn more about agriculture in their local communities, as well as across the state.
25 4-H members and 20 parents attended the tour.
Washington County Farm Bureau displayed a booth at the TFB’s annual meeting, was recognized on stage, and received an award for its efforts.
