CENTRAL TEXAS BEEKEEPERS SCHOOL ACCEPTING STUDENTS

Anyone wanting to learn how to produce their own honey and help save the bees is encouraged to attend the upcoming 12th Annual Central Texas Beekeepers School in Brenham.

The beekeepers school will be held Saturday, March 21st from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Brenham High School.  It is open to the public for anyone interested in keeping bees or learning more about bees.

Attendees will learn the different parts of the hive, how to build or assemble beekeeping equipment, the proper procedure for lighting a smoker, and how to install bees and inspect them. They will also learn how to dress to minimize the chance of being stung, as well as what to do if they are stung.

In addition, guests will learn how to extract honey and how to care for it. Weather permitting, they will even be able to “suit up” and see a live bee hive be opened and inspected.

Cost of the school is $65 for the first adult and $60 for additional adults in the family. Cost for students, including those in college, is $25.  Children under the age of 12 attending classes with a parent are $10.  The cost includes a catered barbecue meal with Blue Bell Ice Cream, and a “school book” with information on beekeeping.  Doors prizes will be given away, and a drawing to give away complete bee hives will be held at 5 p.m.

The Central Texas Beekeepers meet the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Anyone interested in beekeeping is welcome to attend the meetings.
