FUNDRAISING COMPLETE FOR GAINES STATUE AT A&M

The fundraising goal for a new statue on the Texas A&M campus has reached its goal.

The Matthew Gaines Initiative, a student-run organization reached its fundraising goal of $350,000.

In a Facebook post, Initiative president, Erica Pauls said now is the time for a new beginning for current and former students of Texas A&M.

Gaines, Texas’ first African-American state senator, was also instrumental in the passing of the Morrill Act, the legislature that created the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas.

The student group says now that the funds have been raised, they are focusing on the next step, a global ‘call for artists through a Request for Proposal process.
