OVER 4,000 SIGN PETITION TO REMOVE WALKER COUNTY MONUMENT

Over 4,000 people have signed an online petition to remove a controversial monument from the courthouse grounds in Huntsville.

A rally was held two weeks ago, launching the campaign to remove the monument that was erected in 1956 in memory of ‘Confederate Patriots’.

The rally included Huntsville residents, members of Black Lives Matter, local pastors, politicians and the NAACP.

Protesters had requested the item be brought up for discussion at Monday’s special commissioner’s court meeting.  Walker County Judge Danny Pierce said Thursday he expects the issue to be discussed later this month.

  1. How is it racist now? How will this change anything? Why will removing a Statue that represents all the struggles that Americans went through to become the most free nation on earth going to make anyone feel any better? Your problem you have with a piece of history is your problem. Tearing down statues will not fix anything. Don’t like it? Don’t look at it!

  2. So,Eilene, it makes it ok for the rioters or protesters or “groups” to go out and vandalize and paint the statues? I personally don’t think the statues should be removed from any where! That is history that has been there for years. And within the Las few months it suddenly offends someone, seriously? Their like a bunch of wild animals destroying stuff! I’m so sick of hearing about people’s feelings being hurt. Get over it!

    1. There is NO good reason for people to vandalize public property. HOWEVER, these statues have been offending people for decades; They just now have a louder voice and do not fear being attacked or murdered for their views on the monuments. It isn’t about just having your feelings hurt and if you are tired of hearing about someone’s feelings hurt, are you not here complaining about your feelings being hurt over the decimation of these confederate monuments? Sounds like you are being the person you are complaining about. And No. No has to just get over being tired of being marginalized and oppressed. I am beginning to think there are people in our area that clearly just want things to stay in the 1950’s and for everyone else trying to get into the 21st century to stay quiet.

  3. You could use a history lesson mom. War was about state rights. Abe only released the slaves because the south had won the first major battles, he thought by freeing the slaves it would disrupt the southern war effort. Look it up. If you hide history, you are doomed to repeat it.

  4. It is ridiculous to say the least that we have such an ignorant society in the year 2020. The conservatives gave into the liberal attitude to soften up the school’s history books to appease feeble minds. Now, being nice and sensitive has backfired and we have a larger group of history ignoramuses that want to chance the world. Government does not have the right to remove public property without a vote from the majority. Put it on the ballets.

  5. Every person who signed the petition is ignorant. People need to stop destroying property and work toward educating themselves instead. I’m not very optimistic on that front.

  6. We need to leave our statues and monuments alone. The reason we remember our history is so we do not repeat it.

    1. Isn’t that what history books are for? And museums? And proper education in our schools? Monuments erected praising those who fought in a war to physically posses another person is pretty gross in the time we live in.

      2. We can replace them with statues of snowflakes to properly describe this time period.

  7. Seems really fishy since this monument was put up in 1956 and people are just now having a problem with it. Just a bunch of sheep with blinders on following the crowds not realizing they are being led to slaughter by the pided piper. Better wake up people not matter what you do, you can not change HISTORY.

    1. People have always had a problem with it, but in the 50’s racism was much more welcome and therefore those who were against this were more likely to either be too afraid to speak up or out right silenced for their views. This doesn’t change history rather than it creates history! A history showing that we no longer want to celebrate individuals who supported oppression and racism in their community. Tell us something Bobbie – Do you actually think that having a monument erected for a group of people who tortured and killed another group of people is okay? Seriously take race out of the equation and think long an hard about it. History will always be there. In our books, museums and in our schools. Having a monument doesn’t change that.

    2. I would like to know who or Who is this Bobbie Williams might be. I know for sure that it’s not Bobbie C Williams.

    3. What seems “fishy” to me about this monument is that the Civil War had ended in 1865. The Daughters of the Confederacy started erecting monuments in Texas as early as 1897. Brown v. Board of Education began the dismantling of segregation and Jim Crow laws in 1955. This monument was quickly funded and put in place in 1956. Seems fishy. So, sure, keep the monument, and add to it the proper context.

Maybe add this text to the monument: “We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable. — Texas Secession Convention, A Declaration of the Causes which Impel the State of Texas to Secede from the Federal Union, (February 1861).”

Let everyone know the history of Texas and the cause these soldiers were fighting for that we honor with this stone.

  8. BLM are nothing but home grown terrorist that are destroying this country one monument at a time you can’t change the past but you can learn from it so look towards the future and try to make positive changes while respecting the greatest nation on earth. I have seen a lot of changes in my life but I don’t want to see this country torn apart by people who think that they had it rough just because they are not white I had to work hard all my life to get to where I am today. When I was young I tried to get a job at the railroad and the telephone company only to be turned down because I was not a minority that’s not right either the system is not perfect it’s hard to please everyone

    1. BLM is not a terrorist organization. It is an organization of people fighting for and demanding the end of oppression on Non-white people in the world. White privilege is not “having to work for what you have”; it has nothing to do with possessions or class; IT has everything to do with people who are systematically oppressed based on their looks by those who are supposed to serve and protect without judgement. People are being killed without due process. They are being killed and marginalized by the color of their skin. The people who are committing crimes under the guise of BLM are not part of BLM and are only using that to further the divide. Take some time to actually LEARN about both sides of the issues before you try to act like you are the oppressed one.

      1. No. You are wrong.
        Please tell the truth.
BLM is funding by anti americans, not to mention George Soros, who is a very well known Democratic Socialist.
Just the name of this group is racist.

        1. BLM is funded by Americans…..I am sorry you cannot properly do research that isn’t shadowed in blind conspiracy theories put in place to protect the fears of those who choose not to understand things beyond their basic teachings. The Americans that are funding BLM want change and a more equal world for everyone of every shape, size and color! They want oppression of African Americans to end. They want police brutality to end. They want better education and a wide range of knowledge for all. Conspiracy theorists and people who cannot look past race fear that because they do not want change and equality. That is sad and I am sorry that you feel these people are the ones telling you the truth JD. I hope that you find it in your time to better educate yourself through proper channels.
