BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD TO DISCUSS ASYNCHRONOUS INSTRUCTION

The Brenham School Board will meet Monday to discuss the district’s asynchronous learning plan.

Trustees will look to consider and potentially pre-approve submission of the learning plan to the Texas Education Agency (TEA).  Asynchronous learning is defined by the TEA as instruction that does not require having the instructor and student engaged at the same time, instead using methods like self-paced online courses with intermittent teacher instruction, pre-assigned work and pre-recorded instruction videos with guided support.

Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin said the TEA requires all districts to have plans in place for how the district is handling and meeting state guidelines for asynchronous instruction.  As the TEA only recently gave out guidelines for the form of remote learning, districts across the state are still working on approving their plans.

Dr. Chaplin said the first iteration of the learning plan needs to be in to the TEA by October 1st, while all processes need to be complete by the first day of the fourth six week grading period.  He said as districts are in “uncharted waters”, the TEA has been lenient about allowing districts to learn and make adjustments to their plans as they go.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the board will consider an order authorizing issuance of the district’s series 2020 unlimited tax refunding bonds, levying a continuing direct annual ad valorem tax for the payment of the bonds, and delegating authority to certain board members and district staff to execute documents relating to the sale of the bonds.

Trustees will also consider bids for lawn care services and for Chromebooks and carts.  They will also consider approval of a donation from the Brenham ISD Education Foundation, and hear a district update from the superintendent.

The board will also consider a resolution encouraging a culture of voting by district employees and eligible students.  If approved, the resolution would allow the district to encourage staff and eligible students to vote in the upcoming election.

The board will meet Monday evening at 6 p.m. in Rooms 111 and 113 at Brenham High School.  The meeting will be livestreamed on Brenham ISD’s YouTube channel.
