SOMERVILLE ISD ENDING REMOTE INSTRUCTION

Students in Somerville ISD will soon no longer have the option to attend classes remotely.

Somerville ISD Superintendent Karla Sparks announced last week that the district will suspend remote instruction across all campuses beginning Tuesday, October 13th.  All students in the district must begin learning on campus on or before the 13th.

Sparks said, as of Friday, October 2nd, the district had around 16 percent of its student population receiving remote instruction, and 61 percent of those students were failing one or more classes.  She said while the district’s teachers have worked hard to provide both in-class and remote instruction daily, data shows the best option for learning is on-campus.

Sparks said the district’s number one goal is to “provide high-quality instruction for all students through academic and post-secondary success,” and believes the district needs to have all students in attendance at school every school day in order to achieve that goal.

According to Sparks, the only exceptions made will be for students who are told to quarantine by the school district or the public health department due to close contact exposures or a positive test result for COVID-19.

Campus administrators are contacting the parents and guardians of each remote learner to discuss steps needed to return their child back to in-person learning, and explain all options if they choose not to send their child back to campus.
