BURTON CITY COUNCIL TO ADDRESS RESIGNATION OF TWO COUNCILMEMBERS

After postponing its meeting Tuesday due to Mayor David Zajicek being exposed to someone with COVID-19, the Burton City Council will attempt to meet again this upcoming Tuesday.

On the agenda is an item calling for the council’s consideration of the resignation of two councilmembers: Jerry Martin and Buck Oliphant.

Zajicek previously said Martin is resigning for personal reasons, while Oliphant is moving from the area.  Martin has served on the council since May of 2018, while Oliphant joined the council this May.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council will consider an amendment to the city’s animal control ordinance to place a limit on the number of dogs and cats per residence.  The proposed limit would be four dogs and six cats over the age of 3 months old.

The council will also hear a request from the Burton Bridge Ministry, who is considering purchasing a tract of land on North Brazos Street.  The organization is asking the council to approve a preliminary rendering of the structure it plans to erect at the site.

Councilmembers will also consider:

  • A consolidated building codes ordinance that will require all new construction to meet the 2018 International Building Code, the 2018 International Residential Code, and the 2020 National Electrical Code.
  • Going out for bids for mowing, edging, and other maintenance of city properties.
  • An ordinance variance regarding minimum square footage for a home at 519 Nueces Street.

The council will meet Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. at Burton City Hall.  Zajicek said precautions will be taken to maintain social distancing, including possibly holding the meeting outside at city hall depending on the number of people in attendance.
