AIRPORT ADVISORY BOARD HEARS MIXED BAG OF REPORTS
The Brenham Airport Advisory Board heard a mixed bag of reports at their meeting Tuesday evening. On the positive side, the Hump/Bump repair project on the North end of the runway is finally coming to a close. The runway is expected to reopen this Friday or Saturday after it is restriped this week. The airport has been operating with a shortened runway since June while the repairs were taking place. It will now be back to its full 6003 foot length. The other good news is that the city is hiring a full time employee whose primary responsibility will be maintenance at the airport. The street department will be hiring the person, but at least the first year will be spent primarily at the airport.
On the bad news side, the building that housed the Southern Flyer FBO and diner still sits empty. Development Services Director Stephanie Doland told the board that the city is still in negotiations with Brent Nedbalek and the new FBO, Aviators Plus for the use of the building. The fuel tanks for the FBO also remain empty, and Doland said a Request for Proposal for their use will be going out by the end of the year. Before Southern Flyer shut their doors, Nedbalek had installed his own fuel tanks and pumps next to the existing tanks.
During the hanger development report, Doland said there continues to be a lot of interest from individuals wanting to build hangers at the airport. She stated that developing space for hangers will be a top priority on the update of the Airport Master Plan. That update was approved by TxDOT and will take place next year.
