HEMPSTEAD HOME EXPLODES–ONE PERSON HOSPITALIZED

One person has been burned in an overnight explosion at a home in Hempstead.

Just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday, investigators got calls for an explosion on 5th Street near St. Barbe.  When firefighters first arrived, multiple buildings were on fire.  They were able to quickly extinguish the flames.

The Waller County Fire Marshal's Office says a man went to the house to pick up some clothes and when he opened the door, the home exploded.  Investigators say that man does not live at the home.

The man reportedly suffered severe burns on his face, chest and arms.  He was taken by Life Flight to a Houston hospital.  Investigators say EMS treated several others at the scene, mostly for anxiety.

Dean Hensley with Waller County Fire Marshal's Office said the investigation is in its early stages and could take a while to complete.
