Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will provide around $204 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for January.

The move comes as part of the state’s continued COVID-19 response.

Recipients will also see a 15 percent increase in benefits due to recent federal legislation that passed.  HHSC received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to extend the maximum allowable amount of SNAP benefits to recipients based on family size.

The 15 percent increase will start this month and will continue until June.  The increased benefits should appear in the accounts of recipients by January 23rd.

Abbott thanked the USDA for extending the benefits and increasing the amount that families will receive, saying these emergency benefits “continue to help put food on the table for many Texas families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.”
