CHARGES FORTHCOMING AGAINST MAN ACCUSED OF ASSAULT, RESISTING BELLVILLE POLICE

Charges will be pursued against a man accused of shoving an elderly man to the ground and resisting Bellville police officers.

According to Bellville Police Lieutenant Jason Smalley, an officer was called early Wednesday morning to the Shell gas station on West Main Street in reference to an assault that had occurred, no weapons involved.  Smalley said an elderly male was “pushed down to the concrete ground hard.”

When the officer arrived, he was told by the store clerk that the subject had run to Main Street Vet Clinic.  The officer located the subject and attempted to detain the individual, but he resisted.  According to Smalley, local citizens assisted the officer in detaining the individual until additional backup officers arrived.

The subject, identified as a 21-year-old white male, was under the influence of narcotics and was also experiencing medical issues.  He was ultimately transported and admitted into a Katy hospital.

Smalley said police will pursue two charges of assault and one charge of resisting arrest once the subject is cleared of his medical conditions.  He said the name of the suspect cannot be released until he is arrested.

The man who was assaulted at the Shell station was transported by EMS to the Bellville Medical Center emergency room for treatment.  The extent of his injuries are not known.

The police officer who originally responded to the call sustained minor injuries while attempting to restrain the subject.

Smalley thanked the citizens who assisted the officer in detaining the subject, saying officers appreciate the “extra sense of security” when citizens of the community “risk their own safety in order to help an officer in need.”
