CUBETTES BUSY GETTING READY FOR 2021 SOFTBALL SEASON

“It feels great to be back on the dirt!”

That’s how Brenham Cubettes’ softball coach Katie Roberts summed up her feelings about finally getting back on the field, as 2021 workouts got underway this week.

The 2020 season came to a premature end, as the campaign was called off before district play could begin, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our athletes and our coaching staff are not taking it for granted and are using each day to get better’ said Roberts.  “The atmosphere is a little different with the COVID restrictions and wearing masks, but we are making the most of it and doing everything we can to stay on the field. It is all worth it to get to play!”

Roberts says the players are equally excited to get back on the field and are working extremely hard.  “This group is really great about pushing each other and competing at each position on the field. They love the game and competing and it shows daily at practice mentally and physically.”

“I would say they are currently a little sore and adjusting to longer days and the start of season.  We have an extra week this year to prepare so I feel that their bodies will be adjusted a little better going into next week.”

Roberts says she’s particularly looking forward to working with this year’s senior class, which she says features a quartet of outstanding players.  “Our team is driven and led by our gritty senior class of Kramer Eschete, Jenna Hardy, Maggie Hodde and Bryannia Fils.  They have experienced firsthand how it feels to lose a season and are not taking their time in the program for granted.  They remind the girls of the importance of the protocol to stay safe and having no regrets this year.  I feel that we have leaders in each of our grade levels.”

The Cubettes also return a number of 2020 starters, including: Kenley Mikolajchak, Ella Pieper, Riley Meyer, Kameron Stolz and Presley Parker.

Roberts says the goal these first couple weeks is “to see that the girls realize they have the ability and uniqueness to stop at nothing this year.  We want them to buy into the goals of the program, one another and the coaching staff. They are not short on hustle and effort and have been working hard to continuously get better.  We are looking forward to seeing what they accomplish.”

The Cubettes will scrimmage Pflugerville Connally and Troy next Saturday (1/30) at Connally.

The 2021 season opens Monday, February 15 at Klein Cain.  The Cubettes will host the Leadoff Classic, February 18-20.  They’ll open district play, Tuesday, March 2 at Magnolia West.

Cubette softball can be heard throughout the season, live on KWHI AM 1280/FM 101.7/kwhi.com.
