Calvin Carpenter and Davion Coleman combine for 39 points

 

BRENHAM, Texas — The Buccaneers (3-0, 3-0) claimed their third conference win of the season by defeating Coastal Bend College, 91-62, Wednesday night in the Kruse Center.

With the win, the Blinn College men’s basketball team improves its overall and conference record to 3-0.

“I thought our guys really did a good job defensively and got some easy buckets in transition,” head coach Scott Schumacher said. “We have a lot of guys with the it factor and that love playing basketball. We have known since September that these guys were special because of the type of people they are.”

Calvin Carpenter and Davion Coleman were an explosive duo on offense, combining for 39 points. Coleman led with 23, while Carpenter followed with 16. Austin Galuppo led the offense with 12 points in the second half and totaled 14, while Bonke Maring scored 12.

“It feels great to get another win because I love my guys and we play as a team,” Carpenter said. “We have a lot of team chemistry, so I feel like we can go far this season. We have a bond off the court that leads to what we do on the court.”

Coleman scored 15 points in the first half to boost the Buccaneers to a 10-point lead at the half. Coastal Bend opened the game with a 15-11 lead, but the Buccaneers went on a 5-0 run to take the lead for good with 10:58 on the clock. Carpenter scored six points in a 10-0 run that put the Buccaneers on top 31-17 at the 7:01 mark. The Cougars struck back with eight straight points at the end of the first half to trail 47-37.

Galuppo found his stride as he shot two 3-pointers within the first five minutes of the second half for Blinn to lead 62-42. Coleman scored six straight points to help the Buccaneers build a 30-point advantage (82-52) with 6:14 left. Galuppo scored the final two points for Blinn at the free throw line before the Buccaneers defeated the Cougars, 91-62.

Next, the Buccaneers host Paris Junior College in a conference matchup on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m. in the Kruse Center.
