A Brenham ISD student has moved on to the district level of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest.

Leondro Hernandez, an eighth grade Pre-AP history student, wrote a 300-400 word essay tackling the theme of “What is Patriotism to Me?”  The contest encourages students to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern society, and express their views based on a patriotic theme.

Hernandez, on his thoughts of what patriotism means to him, said he looked back at years past and saw how “American morals triumphed in dark and perilous times.”  He said he gained “a stronger sense of patriotism” and an urge to serve his country.

According to the VFW website, more than 165,400 students in grades 6-8 enter the Patriot’s Pen contest each year.
