SMITTY’S CAFE AND BAKERY CELEBRATING TEN-YEAR ANNIVERSARY; RE-GRAND OPENING SATURDAY

A restaurant and bakery in Brenham is celebrating 10 years of business this weekend at a new, but familiar, location.

Smitty’s Café and Bakery is holding a re-grand opening on Saturday at 4355 Highway 290, near Lange Lake Road.  The family-operated restaurant originally started at this location, which was formerly a gas station, on February 11, 2011, before moving to locations on North Park Street near Brenham High School and in downtown Brenham.

Owner Callie Schmidt jumped at the opportunity to purchase the gas station property last March, as she said it allows her to get back to her roots.

The bar area of the restaurant features two bar counters that are 34 feet in length, along with several TVs.

Schmidt intends to embrace the location’s convenience store-past, with plans to sell cold drinks from a walk-in cooler that spans nearly the full right wall of the building.  She also plans to sell gas from the two pumps in front.  Meanwhile, two newly installed bar counters measure 34 feet in length, and several TVs are set up in the bar and dining areas.  The building has also been retrofitted with a new kitchen and storage area, equipped for use during regular hours and for catering events.  The new outdoor area features space for extra seating, outdoor games, an ice house, and live music.

A walk-in cooler spans nearly the full length of the building, and will soon be stocked with cold drinks.

Saturday’s re-grand opening celebration will feature a crawfish boil from 3 to 10 p.m., while the Jake Jackson Band, Robbie Wooten and Steven Marshall will perform from 3:30 to 10 p.m.  Outdoor games will be available, including giant-size Connect Four and Jenga, and there will be a corn hole tournament at 4 p.m., with sign-up starting at 2:30 p.m.

Schmidt is grateful for the continued support from the community over the past decade, particularly during a time where many restaurants are struggling.

A new outdoor seating area will serve as the hub for Saturday's gathering, with space for outdoor games and entertainment.

Starting next week, the restaurant will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.  Schmidt eventually plans to move to seven days a week, with anticipated hours of 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

A separate building on the back of the property holds games like darts and corn hole, and will also be the stage for Saturday night's music performances.
